ROXBURY COMMUNITY CENTER . Boston, MA
Architect
After working for the architecture and planning firm, Stull and Lee, Incorporated, for many years at the beginning of my career, I was given the opportunity to run on a pro-bono project: the conversion of a defunct Fire Station into a Community Center named in honor of the highly respected educator, John D. O’Bryant. This project required ingenuity and resourcefulness from the whole team. I worked alongside the contractors to solicit donations from their material suppliers and used Stull and Lee’s contacts to garner support from community leaders. With our shoe-string budget, sweat equity, and strategic approach to design that included exposing the heating/cooling and fire protection systems to cut down on cost, we transformed this abandoned building into a vibrant and enduring community gathering place.
