SAN DIEGO CITY COLLEGE, ARTS & HUMANITIES and BUSINESS & TECHNOLOGY BUILDINGS . San Diego
Preconstruction Manager
San Diego Community College hired Roesling Nakamura Terada Architects to design two major academic buildings for its City College campus: Arts and Humanities, and Business and Technology. The architects adapted a structural system used in parking garage construction to create long spans with minimal interior vertical supports for large classrooms and auditoria. Turner Construction was hired in a Design-Build capacity, and I was in charge of the extensive pre-construction process, including cost estimate preparation, utilization of Building Information Modeling (BIM) to perform constructibility reviews, bidding and contract negotiation, and on-boarding the construction phase team. The project has won awards for design excellence, serving as a model of urban development that treats exterior spaces as valuable opportunities for social interaction and academic gatherings alike.
