UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGO - STUDENT HOUSING . La Jolla, California
Preconstruction Manager
The fifteen story cast-in-place concrete dormitory at North Campus Housing was developed by UCSD Housing & Dining Services, designed by SOM, with MVE Institutional as Architect of Record, and built by Turner Construction. As pre-construction manager for Turner, I was honored to serve as liason between owner, architects and the building team, to create the first residential building for UCSD’s new Sixth College. As with the Fahrenheit Condominium project, exposed concrete is utilized as an exposed structural system. Additionally, high density concrete became the finish floor at the public spaces, revealing the intrinsic beauty of exposed aggregates to create a beautiful, durable and timeless terrazzo. Concrete work was performed admirably by T.B Penick & Sons. Sunshades protect the dorm rooms from excessive daylight and provide visual patterning on the main elevations. A small laundrette and a penthouse meeting room provide student amenities, as do the outdoor cooking and relaxing spaces. This project was awarded LEED Silver Certification.
